The children in Gabon start going school at the age of six years. The duration of primary education is six years in total. School life expectancy in Gabon is 13 years from Grade 1 to Grade 13.

Gabon offers coeducation; literacy rate is approximately 72%.

Education is provided in French. In the year 1995 – 96 there were approximately 1 147 schools providing education at different levels. The Gabon Republic government has plans to build more schools and educational institutions to send education to all. The qualifications earned through schools and colleges in Gabon are recognized worldwide.

Gabon joined UNESCO on November 16, 1960. A UNESCO Cluster Office is established in Libreville. A UNESCO Chair in Social Development and Democracy was formed in 2004 at the University of Omar Bongo, in Libreville. As of September 2006, 55 schools in Gabon were part of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
